Utah is graced with some of the most spectacular landscapes in the United States, but Zion National Park stands out even in this amazing state. Not only is Zion one of the most magnificent natural places on earth, it’s also extremely easy for visitors to access. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why almost three million people make the journey to Zion National Park every year. For RV travellers, exploring the wonders of Zion can start in one of two places. If you’re keen to see more of Utah and possibly hit the ski slopes before heading south, you’ll be best served by a Salt Lake City RV rental. On the other hand, if you’d prefer to balance the best in urban entertainment with the out-of-this-world natural sights of Zion, you’re better off opting for RV rentals in Las Vegas and making the shorter trip northeast. If a slightly longer road trip to your destination sounds appealing, Denver is a fantastic choice. You’ll get to drive through national forest for half your trip, not to mention having the opportunity to explore the many amazing natural features around Denver before you set out. Driving northeast from Los Angeles through the Mojave National Preserve (and Las Vegas) is also achievable in one full day of travel. Whichever way you choose, getting to Zion National Park is just the introduction to a trip you’ll remember for years to come.
Zion National Park’s trails and twisting canyons
Whatever your level of fitness, you can find amazing places to explore in Zion.
To enjoy the scenic beauty of the park without over exerting yourself, try the Emerald Pools Trail. This isn’t really one track but a network of interlinking loop trails and spurs in five distinct sections, which gives visitors plenty of freedom to decide exactly how much they want to tackle. This is easy to moderate hike, which starts from and returns to Zion Lodge, features a several stunning waterfalls which are especially eye-catching in spring or after a summer storm.
If you’re game for a bit more of a challenge, Angel’s Landing could be just what you’re looking for. Halfway between a hike and a rock climb, those with a fear of heights would do well to avoid Angel’s Landing but daring souls who brave rock hewn steps and chained path to attain the summit will be richly rewarded with an unparalleled view over Zion Canyon.
Of course, there can be no mention of Zion RV rental holidays without also talking about the park’s canyons. This is the place to go for summer canyoneering. Many of the canyons here are suitable for those making their first forays into canyoneering, providing an incredibly beautiful introduction to a world of twisting sandstone gullies and thin ribbons of blue sky. If you already know your way around the technical aspects of canyoneering, Zion caters to you too. There are a number of routes which can provide a thrilling challenge, even for veteran canyoneers.
Zion RV rental camping spots
Exploring Zion National Park on foot is all very well but there’s also the matter of where in Zion to park your RV rental for the night.
Lava Point is your most rustic option. Open June through October, Zion RV rental holidaymakers should be aware that vehicles longer than 19 feet aren’t allowed on the road to Lava Point Campground. Six campsites are available and facilities are minimal, so a self-contained RV would be preferable if you choose Lava Point. There is no charge for camping.
Watchman Campground allows you a few more amenities with electric hookups and a dump station available but you’ll have to be proactive to secure a spot. From March through the end of November anyone who wants to stay at Watchman is strongly advised to make a reservation. Reservations can be made up to six months ahead of time, and you can expect to pay between $20 and $30 per night, depending on which section of the campsite you go for.
South Campground has over 100 campsites available on a first come, first served basis. No electric hook-ups are available, but there is a dump station and potable water. Zion RV rental campers should know that shaded sites can only accommodate vehicles with a max height of 13 feet. Campsites are $20 per night.
