Situated on the stunning Lake Malawi, the country itself offers picturesque scenery, an array of African culture and many avenues to take in your camper rental. Travelling by road is the only way to enjoy Malawi. With mountain peaks reaching 10,000ft and kilometres of highlands, forests and valleys, any camper trip to Africa would be enhanced by a visit to Malawi.
Parks, reserves and Lake Malawi
There are nine national parks and wildlife reserves in Malawi. The most popular include:
Liwonde National Park
Lake Malawi National Park
Nkhotakota Game Reserve
Kasungu National Park
Nyika National Park
While birdwatching is very popular at Liwonde National Park, Kasungu is well known for antelope and zebra. There really is no limit to the beautiful animals you can get close to in Malawi. Also, Lake Malawi offers 52 miles of sandy beach, with Cape Maclear and Likoma Island popular spots. The Northern Lakeshore district includes Karonga District and Nkhatabay, while Central Lakeshore incorporates Ngala and Chipoka. You will find Cape Maclear in the Southern area of Lake Malawi.
A taste of culture in Malawi
The people of Malawi are regarded as some of the friendliest in Africa. Get amongst them by visiting the remains of the Karonga district and the Lake Museum at Mangochi. Blantyre is host to many books and artefacts depicting the country’s rich history, while the Lake of Stars music festival in September is internationally renowned.
Getting around Malawi in your camper rental
You are travelling in the Tropics, so the dry season (winter) is April-May, October to November, with a very slim chance of rain and pleasant temperatures in the 20s. Campervan hire is very popular during this time, so book as far in advance as possible. There isn’t a great deal of traffic in Malawi, but make sure you have packed plenty of spare water and fuelled up sufficiently. Do not drive at night and be careful of potholes and poorly maintained roads.
